Matthew Roberts

Dr. Matthew Roberts studied medical sciences at Cambridge University (UK) and then clinical medicine at Oxford University (UK), qualifying as a doctor in 1986. He is currently Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado, Denver and Attending Anesthesiologist at the Denver Health Medical Center.

Dr. Roberts served with the British Royal Army Medical Corps for over 20 years and finished his active service as a Lieutenant Colonel. His early career included service with the Parachute Regiment and as a medical officer on a major expedition in Africa. During his military service he gained significant experience in the practice of medicine, anesthesia and critical care in austere environments. He served on active duty in multiple war zones over the years including Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. As a result of that experience Dr. Roberts has developed a major specialist expertise in trauma care. He continued to serve in the British Army as a consultant anesthetist at the Royal Hospital Haslar and as an honorary consultant in intensive care at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

In 2001 Dr. Roberts relocated to the USA and was appointed Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado, Denver while practicing at University of Colorado Hospital. During this time he was one of a small group of anesthesiologists specializing in liver transplantation. In 2012 he was appointed to the Denver Health Medical Center, the Level 1 trauma center for Denver, Colorado.

A keen educator, Dr. Roberts combines his interest in teaching and trauma through the Primary Trauma Care Foundation, based in the UK, which endeavors to train doctors in the developing world how best to manage severely injured patients. Most recently this led to his leading trauma courses in China over the last few years.
